Siemens' servo drives and variable frequency drives (VFDs) sit within the SINAMICS family, and the portfolio is best understood not as a single product line but as a layered architecture: at the base are standard-performance VFDs for pumps, fans, and conveyors; above them sit high-performance VFDs for demanding single-axis duty; and at the top are servo drive systems for precise positioning, multi-axis synchronization, and CNC motion control.
The VFD layer: from standard duty to high performance
Standard Performance VFDs (V20, G120C, G120) cover 0.12–250 kW and target pumps, fans, compressors, conveyors, and simple single-axis positioning. They prioritize compactness, quick commissioning, integrated energy-saving modes, and built-in safety functions such as STO on the G120C.
High Performance VFDs begin with the SINAMICS G220, the designated successor tier to G120. It spans 0.55–160 kW (with planned extension toward 1 MW) and is the first SINAMICS drive in the Xcelerator portfolio. Its differentiators are architectural rather than incremental: SIL 3 / PL e safety is standard (STO and SS1-t via terminals or PROFIsafe) without needing a separate F-variant control unit; the Clean Power variant reduces current harmonics to under 2% without a line reactor or DC-link choke; and a built-in web server enables browser-based commissioning with no additional app or module. A Regenerative variant is planned for energy recovery, allowing braking energy to be fed back into the grid rather than dissipated as heat. Above G220 in power and application scope, the G130/G150 cabinet units cover 75–2,700 kW for heavy-duty pump, fan, and compressor installations.
The servo layer: from entry positioning to modular multi-axis
SINAMICS S200 is the entry-level servo package: drive plus SIMOTICS S-1FL2 motor, 0.1–7 kW, 350% overload, and a choice of PROFINET (PN) or pulse-train (PTI) variants. The PTI version is notable for retrofit work—it adds a positioning axis to an older machine without touching the existing fieldbus. Safety is terminal STO/SS1-t only, keeping it cost-focused.
SINAMICS S210 occupies the mid-to-high dynamic range, also 0.1–7 kW, built as a compact one-cable servo with a refreshed hardware generation (V6 firmware) adding a second encoder interface for direct measuring systems and EtherNet/IP for non-Siemens controllers. Its EPOS positioner runs on the drive itself, offloading simple positioning tasks from a busy PLC.
SINAMICS S220, launched in October 2025, is the designated successor to S120 for the mid-power modular segment. Its CU320-3 control unit runs up to 12 axes; motor modules span 1.1–900 kW; DRIVE-CLiQ Express links components at 1 Gbit/s; and the safety response time drops from 12 ms to 4 ms at SIL 3, with IEC 62443-4-1 cybersecurity certification built in. The original SINAMICS S120, however, remains the reference for the widest power range and the most demanding multi-axis applications: its booksize format uses a shared DC busbar so that multiple Motor Modules draw from one central infeed, enabling compact, energy-exchanging multi-axis lineups for machine tools, packaging machinery, and complex production systems.
The unifying logic: system co-engineering, not component sales
What distinguishes Siemens in this space is not any single drive model but the engineered coupling between drive, motor, and control. Each servo tier ships as a validated system with its matching SIMOTICS motor family—S200 with S-1FL2, S210 with S-1FK2, and S220/S120 compatible with a broad SIMOTICS S/M/L/T range covering rotary servo, main spindle, linear, and torque motors. The MOTION-CONNECT cable system, DRIVE-CLiQ digital interface, and electronic rating plates on every component further reduce commissioning friction and spare-parts ambiguity. In CNC applications, SINAMICS S120 Combi integrates line infeed and motor modules into a single Power Module tailored to SINUMERIK 828D controlled turning and milling machines.
In short, Siemens' servo and VFD offering is a tiered, system-integrated motion architecture: VFDs for flow and throughput, servo drives for precision and synchronization, and a common engineering and digital backbone that lets a single plant scale from a simple pump drive to a 12-axis CNC without leaving the same ecosystem.
