High-Performance Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)

Siemens' High-Performance Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) sit above standard-duty drives, targeting applications that require high dynamic response, precise motion control, and multi-axis synchronization—rather than simple flow or throughput regulation. The tier is anchored by three distinct platforms.

SINAMICS S220 is the next-generation flagship, succeeding the S120 platform. It is built around the CU320-3 control unit, which manages up to 12 axes from a single unit, supported by a multicore processor and the DRIVE-CLiQ Express interface at 1 Gbit/s for high-speed data exchange. Air-cooled motor modules span 1.1 kW to 900 kW, scalable to 6,984 kW via 8-fold parallel connection. Its new safety architecture cuts the safety cycle from 12 ms to 4 ms, certified to SIL 3, and the platform is developed under IEC 62443-4-1 for cybersecurity.

SINAMICS S120 remains the reference for modular flexibility and the widest power breadth, extending from 0.12 kW to 5,700 kW. A single Control Unit can govern vector control, servo control, and U/f control across multiple axes, making it adaptable to both high-precision positioning and high-torque single-motor duty within one architecture. It remains widely deployed in machine tools, packaging machinery, and complex production systems.

SINAMICS G130/G150 serve high-power, single-motor applications where multi-axis coordination is not required. The G130 built-in unit reaches up to 800 kW (690 V), while the G150 cabinet unit extends to 2,700 kW at the same voltage. They deliver 160% overload for 10 seconds or 150% for 60 seconds on the high-overload cycle, suited to constant-torque loads such as extruders, mixers, and crushers. Both support asynchronous, synchronous, and synchronous reluctance motors, with safety integrated to SIL 2 / PL d.

What unites these platforms is a shared engineering logic: deep integration of safety and digital tooling rather than drive hardware alone. Virtual commissioning via DriveSim Designer, TIA Portal integration, and high-frequency field data for predictive maintenance apply across the tier, positioning the drives as nodes within a digitally validated motion system rather than standalone components.
